Bio

I first began doing concert photography as a way to go to concerts and be able to get close enough to the stage to take really good shots of the bands. That was in 2002, shortly after I had bought my first digital camera, an Olympus C-700 Ultra Zoom.

Even with a small consumer-end camera like that, I was able to get some surprising photos. I discovered that I seemed to have a talent for catching just the right pose with just the right lighting -- and I found I was really getting into this whole photography thing. So I passed the Olympus on to my mother and bought a professional digital camera for my concert work -- the Canon EOS10D 6.3 megapixel (my backup camera body) and a Canon EOS 30D 8.1 megapixel camera body that I use today, to which I've added a variety of lenses that consist of a standard 50 mm lens, 25-80 mm lens, 75-300 mm lens, and a 28 - 135 mm lens with Image Stability Sensor and filters over the years.

Of course, half the fun is in taking the pictures, but the other half is in being able to share them. From 2003 to 2004 I did freelance concert photography and review work for Praxis Magazine. I've also had a couple of art shows in the Triangle area of North Carolina, where I live. The most recent was at the (locally) famous Pepper's Pizza in the fall of 2006. That show got me a couple of very nice write-ups in the local press (check my links page for links to the write ups).

Though my specialty is photographing heavy metal bands, I occasionally get other gigs, such as photographing weddings and special events like galas. My most recent work doesn't use my photography skills at all, but does draw on my years of participation on the metal scene: writing CD reviews for Up and Coming magazine.

The best thing, though, is the bands. Over the years I've not only had the chance to hear and photograph some of the best metal bands in the business, I've also had the chance to interview them. There have been so many great musicians, it's hard to pick just one or two who have been my favorites. Zakk Wilde (Ozzy Osborne's guitarist, and Black label Society), Dez Fafara (good friend of mine) of Devil Driver, Chris Spicuzza and Mark Hunter of Chimaira, James Root #4 of Slipknot, Brian Fair and Paul Romanko with Shadow's Fall, Max Cavalera of Soulfly / Cavalera Conspiracy -- I could go on and on!

For reasons you can probably guess, one of the most memorable interviews and photography sessions I've had was with Dimebag Darrell just 9 months before he was shot and killed while performing in Columbus, Ohio at the Alrosa Villa nightclub. The news of his death really stunned me, so I designed my show at Pepper's Pizza as a tribute to the man, his work, and his legacy.

So what's next? I continue to do freelance concert photography -- my main love -- as well as interviews and reviews of everything from venues to performances to new CDs. And I'm working on getting more exposure for my work -- as CD covers, in magazines with national circulations...even in product catalogs!

I am willing and looking for bands to go on tour with that wants their tour photographed for myspace and websites, e-mail me for details.

As a dedicated metal-head, I'd be happy to hear from you if you'd like to order one of my prints or contract with me for some specialized work. Go to my contact page or portfolio page and click on the link to write to me.
